Air conditioners provide cool air by compressing a refrigerant from a gas to a liquid. The compressed gas then travels to a metering device such as a thermal expansion valve. The device allows the compressed refrigerant to expand at a preset rate. When the gas expands it gets very cold. The cold expanded gas travels through the evaporator coil within the air handler. The blower fan forces air across the cold coil to provide cool air. The refrigerant then travels back to the compressor to begin the cycle again.
